February 14th
Valentine’s Day, a day which celebrates love and passion, is observed each year on February 14. The origins of the holiday can be traced to the Middle Ages when courtly love and sacraments were well-known.
It was considered to be an occasion to celebrate romance between romantic partners and friends in the fourteenth century. It was commonplace to send Valentine’s Day flowers, cards and gifts to one another.
In the early 19th century, commercial cards had been produced. Also, postcards that were printed in bulk gained popularity. Themed displays of these postcards were put up in stores.
Valentine’s Day traditions include buying your loved one a sweet or chocolate present along with a card or flower. It is also possible to gift them with jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day is observed annually on February 2. Groundhog Day is celebrated every year in Canada on February 2.
The celebration originated out of a belief in superstition that was prevalent among Pennsylvanians who spoke Dutch. The American tradition of making forecasts for weather was introduced to America by German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog, a groundhog from Pennsylvania provides meteorological predictions for the remainder of winter.
The tradition originated from a discovery by scientists that mice hibernate in winter. The goal was to predict the next six weeks of the season by observing the way that animals reacted.
The Sciuridae family of tiny hairy mammals includes groundhogs. It hibernates during winter. Groundhog Day mornings are a great time to spot the animals peering out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a national holiday. The holiday honors the previous American presidents. Presidents’ Day has traditionally been a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln.
Although it’s a federal holiday not every state observes this holiday. Some states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents on the same day, but other states only recognize one. However, Presidents’ Day is now widely accepted as a way to recognize all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.
Presidents Day has a complicated history. Washington’s Birthday used to be the name used for the day of celebration. It is now called Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday is well-known as an unofficial holidaythat is also known as Washington’s Day. In the 1870s however it became a federally recognized holiday. Congress approved the Uniform Monday Day Holiday Act.
Meteor storms
Every year, the Earth’s orbit revolves around sun. Small, tiny meteors are released into space. They are visible in the sky and can be seen all over the sky. Certain showers are more stunning than others. The best moment to view.
One of the largest and most stunning meteor showers that occurs throughout the year is the Perseids. This is due to the fact that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible for. It is visible from the Northern Hemisphere. But, considering that the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most stunning fireballs, it is logical to look at the phenomenon from the Southern Hemisphere.
Every year there are four major meteor showers. The Quadrantid Number one is famous for its short but powerful maximum. The Lyrid Another one is famous for its unique surges. A Geminid is well-known for being approachable.
Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia was a major celebration in the ancient city of Rome. The month of February was when a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. During this rite, priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar next to the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. It was believed that the hearth could provide fertile soil and protect the fields of grain.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor Ceres, the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to 202 BC.
Neptunalia was one of the most well-known Roman celebrations. These were originally held to honor Mars god of war.Vestalia, according to some academics is the most popular among the three.
Roman workweeks ran for eight days. There were two parts of each day: morning and afternoon. Nundin was a collection that comprised of 8 days. The remaining 29 days comprised the rest of the calendar year.
