February 14th

Valentine’s Day, a day which celebrates love and passion, is observed each year on February 14. The origins of the holiday can be traced to the Middle Ages when courtly love and sacraments were well-known.

It was considered to be an occasion to celebrate romance between romantic partners and friends in the fourteenth century. It was commonplace to send Valentine’s Day flowers, cards and gifts to one another.

In the early 19th century, commercial cards had been produced. Also, postcards that were printed in bulk gained popularity. Themed displays of these postcards were put up in stores.

The Sciuridae family of tiny hairy mammals includes groundhogs. It hibernates during winter. Groundhog Day mornings are a great time to spot the animals peering out of their burrows.

Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a national holiday. The holiday honors the previous American presidents. Presidents’ Day has traditionally been a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln.

Although it’s a federal holiday not every state observes this holiday. Some states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents on the same day, but other states only recognize one. However, Presidents’ Day is now widely accepted as a way to recognize all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.

Presidents Day has a complicated history. Washington’s Birthday used to be the name used for the day of celebration. It is now called Presidents Day.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity

The Lupercalia was a major celebration in the ancient city of Rome. The month of February was when a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. During this rite, priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar next to the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. It was believed that the hearth could provide fertile soil and protect the fields of grain.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor Ceres, the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to 202 BC.

Neptunalia was one of the most well-known Roman celebrations. These were originally held to honor Mars god of war.Vestalia, according to some academics is the most popular among the three.

Roman workweeks ran for eight days. There were two parts of each day: morning and afternoon. Nundin was a collection that comprised of 8 days. The remaining 29 days comprised the rest of the calendar year.
