Marching Illini Calendar – There are many enjoyable holidays scheduled for February and they can all be observed during the entire month. These include Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day as well as Groundhog Day and meteor showers. Many old Roman celebrations are also held on various dates.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day is a day that is devoted to love and romance which is celebrated every year on February 14. The Middle Ages are the time when Valentine’s Day first celebrated. This is a time when courtly love as well as the sacraments still were commonplace.
It was believed to be a celebration of friendship between romantically engaged acquaintances from the 14th century. Valentine’s Day was the day to exchange gifts, flowers, and even cards.
At the start of the 19th century commercial cards had already been created. Popularity grew with the popularity of postcards printed in large quantities. These cards were then displayed in shops in themed displays.
Valentine’s Day traditions include buying your loved one a sweet or chocolate present , along with a flower or card. You can also gift them jewelry.

Groundhog Day falls on February 2. Groundhog Day is celebrated annually in Canada on February 2.
Superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch people led to the celebration. The American tradition of creating forecasts for weather was introduced to America through German immigration. Punxsutawney Philip Punxsutawney Philip, one of the Pennsylvania groundhog, offers meteorological forecasts for the remainder of winter.
The tradition was born when scientists discovered an animal that was hibernating in the winter. The aim was to predict the weather conditions for the six remaining weeks by observing how animals respond to it.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae, a small family of mammals that have hair. In the winter months, their main purpose is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day is a common time when they can be seen peering out from their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a national holiday. It’s an honor to all former American presidents. The Presidents Day holiday been a time to honor both Lincoln and Washington.
Although it’s an official holiday, not all states observe it. Some states honor both presidents simultaneously, while others only recognize one. Presidents Day has become a day to honor all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
It has a long background. Washington’s Birthday was the name used for the celebration. Now, it is also known as Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday is a well-known and unofficial holidaythat is also known as Washington’s Day. In the 1870s, however it was declared an official holiday recognized by the federal government. In response, Congress passed Uniform Monday Holiday Law.
Meteors and storms
Each year, the Earth’s orbit revolves around sun. Small, tiny meteors are released into space. They can appear in all directions. Some showers can be more spectacular than others. It is usually best to view the showers in the evening.
Perseids is among the most spectacular and stunning meteor showers of 2018. It is because Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle caused it. It is visible from the Northern Hemisphere, but as the Southern Hemisphere has some of the most intense fireballs, it is also worthwhile to look up from there.
There are four meteor showers that dominate the sky each year. The Quadrantid, number one, is renowned for its brief but potent maximum. Another one of the most famous for its bizarre surges is the Lyrid. Geminids are a Geminid is well-known for being friendly.
Roman holidays from antiquity
The Lupercalia was one of the most popular holidays of the past of Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony took place in the middle of February. Priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar for the Lapis Nuiger during the ceremony. The hearth was filled up with blood of the animal. The fertility and protection of blood is believed to be beneficial to the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor Ceres, the harvest goddess. Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations were recorded.
Vestalia, Saturnalia, and Neptunalia were three other well-known Roman celebrations. They were celebrated originally in honor of Mars the god of war.
Roman workweeks were 8 days long. There were two phases of each day: the morning and the afternoon. Nundin was a collection that comprised of 8 days. The remaining 29 days comprised the rest of the calendar year.
