While it’s an official holiday, many states don’t observe it. Some states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents at the same time, while other states only recognize one. But Presidents’ Day is widely regarded as a time to celebrate the achievements of all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.
The history of Presidents’ Day is a bit tangled. Washington’s Birthday was the initial name of the celebration. Today Presidents’ Day is the official name.

The Lupercalia is one of the most celebrated holidays in the past of Rome. In the middle of February, a fertility and cleansing ceremony was celebrated. The priests offered animal sacrifices to an altar close to the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was then cleansed of the blood of the animal. It was thought that the hearth would provide fertility and security for the fields of grain.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor of Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as the year 202 BC.
Neptunalia and Saturnalia were some other well-known Roman celebrations. These celebrations were initially held to honor Mars the god of war.
Roman workweeks ran for eight days. There were two periods to every day: morning and afternoon. A nundin was an eight-day collection, with the remainder of the year comprised of 29 days.
