The idea for this celebration came from a superstition that originated among Pennsylvanians who were Dutch. The tradition of forecasting the weather was introduced in the United States by German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog, a groundhog from Pennsylvania is a meteorological forecaster throughout the winter.

The tradition was born after scientists discovered mice that hibernate during winter. The aim was to predict the weather patterns for the remaining six weeks by studying how animals react to it.

Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae tribe of small hairy mammals. They hibernate in winter. In the early morning hours of Groundhog Day, they are often seen peeking out of their burrows.

Presidents’ Daylight is regarded as a national holiday on the third Monday of February. It is a way to honor the past presidents of America. The Presidents’ Day was typically a day of celebration to honor Lincoln as well as Washington.

Roman holidays that date back to antiquity

The Lupercalia was a well-known festival in ancient Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was held. During this rite, priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar beside the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was filled with the blood of the animal. The belief was that it would be beneficial to the fertility and protection of the grain fields.

Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was held to honor of Ceres, the harvest goddess. Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented.

Neptunalia, Saturnalia, Vestalia were just a few examples of the well-known Roman celebrations. They were celebrated originally in honor of Mars the god of war.

The Roman workweek was 8 days long. Each day had two parts: the morning and afternoon. The nundin was eight days long, while the 29 remaining days were the rest of the days.
