The celebration originated from a superstition that originated among Pennsylvanians who were Dutch. German immigrants brought the practice of weather forecasts to the United States. Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog, a groundhog from Pennsylvania provides meteorological predictions throughout the winter.

When scientists discovered that mice hibernated in winter, they set the basis for this practice. It was designed to predict the coming six weeks by studying how animals react to the weather.

Groundhogs belong to of the Sciuridae family of tiny hairy mammals. They hibernate in winter. The morning of Groundhog Day, they are often visible peeking out of burrows.

Christmas Day

The third Monday in February is the Presidents’ Daylight. It is an official holiday for the United States of America. The holiday honors the past American presidents. Presidents’ Day is traditionally a day to honor Lincoln as well as Washington.

Even though it is an annual holiday of the United States, many states don’t observe it. Some states honor the birthdays of both presidents at the same time, but others only honor one. However, Presidents’ Day is now widely recognized as a day to honor all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.

There is a long and complicated story that explains Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday is the original title of the celebration.

Washington’s birthday, more commonly called Washington’s Day is a well-known unofficial holiday. However, it was recognized as a national holiday in the late 1870s. In the aftermath, Congress passed Uniform Monday Holiday Law.

Storms of Meteors

Each year, the Earth orbits in the solar system. This triggers a rush of tiny meteors to be released into space. They can be observed all over the sky. Some showers are more spectacular than others. It is usually the nighttime moment to view.

The Perseids meteor shower is one of the most spectacular and largest of all meteor showers. It is because Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle was responsible. It will be visible from Northern Hemisphere. But, considering that the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most spectacular fireballs, it makes sense to also look at the phenomenon from the Southern Hemisphere.

There are four meteor showers that dominate the sky every year. The Quadrantid is number one due to its power but short maximum. The Lyrid also is renowned for its peculiar surges. The Geminid is also known for its attractive appearance.

Roman holidays from antiquity

The Lupercalia was a well-known festival in ancient Rome. The cleansing and fertility ceremony was held in February, in the middle. Priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar to the Lapis Nuiger during the ceremony. Blood from the animal was poured in the hearth. The grain fields were believed to benefit from its protection and fertility.

Ludi Ceriales, another celebration, was celebrated in honor of Ceres, the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as 202 BC.

Neptunalia, Saturnalia, Vestalia were just a few of the most well-known Roman celebrations. They were celebrated originally to honor Mars, a god of war.

Roman working weeks lasted for eight days. There were two parts of every day: the morning and the afternoon. A nundin was an eight-day collection, with the rest of the year made up of 29 days.
