Groundhog Day falls on February 2. It’s also a popular holiday in Canada however it’s American Thanksgiving.
The idea for this celebration came out of a belief in superstition that was prevalent among Pennsylvanians Dutch-speaking people. But Americans inherited the custom of making weather predictions through German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who gives forecasts for the remainder of winter.
It all started when researchers discovered an animal that was hibernating during the winter. The initial idea was to forecast six weeks of each season by studying how animals responded to the conditions.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae group of small hairy mammals. They hibernate in winter. On the morning of Groundhog Day, they are often seen peeking out from their burrows.

The third Monday of February, President’s Daylight is declared an American holiday. It’s a tribute to all former American presidents. It has been a day to pay tribute to both Lincoln and Washington.
Although it’s a national holiday however, many states do not observe it. Some states recognize both presidents, whereas other states are limited to one president. Presidents Day is now widely recognized as a chance to recognize every one of the U.S. presidents, especially Lincoln.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia was a major celebration in the ancient city of Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony were held in the middle February. In this ceremony it was a time when priests offered sacrifices to animals on the altar next to the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was filled with blood of the animal. The belief was that this would benefit the grain crops by ensuring fertility and securing the crops from damage.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres (the harvest goddess). Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to the year 202 BC.
Neptunalia and Saturnalia were among the other popular Roman celebrations. These celebrations were originally held in honor of Mars, a god of war.
Roman workweeks were 8 days long. There were two phases of each day: the morning and the afternoon. Nundin was a collection that comprised of 8 days. The remaining 29 days were the remainder of the calendar year.
