March 2023 English Calendar – There are a variety of fun holidays planned for February and they are all observed during the entire month. Some of the most popular holiday celebrations include Presidents’ Day. Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and meteor showers. There are also many ancient Roman celebrations which take place on different dates.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day is a day that is devoted to love and romance that is observed every year on February 14. The celebration’s origins can be traced to the Middle Ages, a time when sacraments and courtly love were widespread.
It was thought to be a celebration of romance between romantically connected acquaintances from the 14th century. In the 14th century, on Valentine’s Day, it was customary to send flowers, cards and other gifts to one another.
In the early 19th century commercial cards became easily available. Postcards printed in bulk gained popularity. They were displayed in themed displays that were put up in stores.
Giving your loved one a chocolate or candy present, along with a card or flower, is a traditional Valentine’s Day tradition. It is also possible to present them with jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day, which is celebrated every February 2 and is an annual celebration. Even though it is popular in Canada but Thanksgiving is an American holiday.
The celebration was born out of superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. The custom of forecasting the weather was introduced to America by German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who makes meteorological predictions all through winter.
It all started when researchers discovered mice that were hibernating throughout the winter. The initial plan was to forecast six weeks of each season by studying how animals reacted to the conditions.
The Sciuridae family of tiny hairy mammals includes groundhogs. It hibernates in winter. On the morning of Groundhog Day, they are often seen peeking out from their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents’ Daylight is regarded as a national holiday on the third Monday in February. It pays tribute to the previous American presidents. It has been a day to honour both Lincoln and Washington.
While it’s an official holiday, several states do not observe it. Some states celebrate both presidents at the same time, while other states only honor one. But, Presidents’ Day is now widely accepted as a means of honoring the achievements of all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.
It has had a complicated background. Washington’s Birthday was the original title of the celebration. Today Presidents’ Day is the official title.
A well-known unofficial holiday was Washington’s birthday, often called Washington’s Day. In the 1870s, it was made a federal holiday. In response, Congress passed Uniform Monday Holiday Law.
Meteors and storms
Each year, Earth rotates around its sun. Small meteors are released into the atmosphere. They are visible from anywhere in the sky. Some showers are more impressive than others. Nighttime is often the best moment to view.
Perseids is among the most stunning and spectacular meteor showers in 2018. This is due to Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. It is visible from the Northern Hemisphere. But, considering that the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most stunning fireworks, it is only natural to be able to observe the phenomenon from that region.
There are four major meteor showers each year. The Quadrantid 1 is well-known for its potent but short peak. The other is the Lyrid that is renowned for its unique surges. The Geminid is also well-known for its pleasant appearance.
Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia was an ancient Roman holiday that was loved by many. In the middle of February the fertility and cleansing ceremony was celebrated. Priests offered sacrifices to animals at an altar near the Lapis Niger during the ritual. The hearth was then cleaned of blood from the animal. It was thought that the hearth would offer fertility and protection for the fields of grain.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations date back to the year 202 BC.
Vestalia, Saturnalia, and Neptunalia were three other famous Roman celebrations. These celebrations were originally meant to celebrate Mars the god of War.
Roman workweeks had eight days. There were two sections to every day, the morning and the afternoon. Nundin was an 8-day collection, with the rest of the year comprised of 29 days.
