Groundhog Day is celebrated annually on February 2. It is also celebrated in Canada however it’s an American Thanksgiving.
The belief in the superstition of Pennsylvanians Dutch people gave rise to the festival. However, the practice of forecasting weather came to the United States with German immigration. Punxsutawney Philip is a Pennsylvania groundhog, offers meteorological forecasts for the remainder of winter.
Scientists discovered that a mouse hibernated during winter. The original plan was to forecast six weeks of the seasons by watching how animals responded to the climate.
Groundhogs form part of the Sciuridae group of tiny hairy mammals. They are winter animals and their main job is to hibernate. Groundhog Day is the most regular day they can be observed looking out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
The third Monday in February is the Presidents’ Daylight. It is an official holiday for the United States of America. It pays tribute past American presidents. Presidents’ Day has traditionally served as a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln.
Although it’s a national holiday However, many states don’t observe it. Some states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents at the same time, whereas some states only recognize only one. The Presidents Day is now an occasion to celebrate all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
Presidents Day has a complicated past. Washington’s Birthday was the initial name of the celebration that is now referred to as Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday, often referred to by the title Washington’s Day was a well-known not-official holiday. In the 1870s, it became a national holiday. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress.
Meteor showers
Every year, Earth rotates around its sun. Small meteors are released into the atmosphere. They appear virtually everywhere in the skies. Some showers seem more impressive in comparison to others. The best time to view them is in the evening.
Perseids is one of most spectacular and stunning meteor showers of 2018. It is likely that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is the cause. It will be visible from Northern Hemisphere. But, since the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most spectacular fireballs, it is logical to also observe the phenomenon from there.
Four significant meteor showers occur every year. The Quadrantid is the first due to its power but brief maximum. Another one is the Lyrid. It’s known for its odd surges. Additionally, the Geminid is renowned for its approachable appearance.
Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia holiday was very popular in ancient Rome. The cleansing and fertility ceremony took place in February, in the middle. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar close to the Lapis Niger in the ceremony. The hearth was then cleaned of blood from the animal. The belief was that it would be beneficial for the fertility and protection of the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as 202 BC.
Neptunalia as well as Saturnalia were two other well-known Roman celebrations. The celebrations were initially planned to honor Mars and the god of war.
Roman workweeks had eight days. Every day was divided into two parts: the morning or afternoon. Nundin was an eight-day collection, with the remainder of the year being comprised of 29 days.
