The celebration originated from superstition from Pennsylvanians and Dutch people. However, the practice of making predictions about weather conditions originated in the United States with German immigration. PunxsutawneyPhil, a Pennsylvania groundhog makes meteorological predictions for all of the winter.
When scientists discovered that mice hibernate during winter, they set the foundation for this custom. The goal was to predict the next six weeks of the season by observing how animals reacted to climate.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae which is a small group of mammals that have hair. They are winter animals and their main purpose is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day is the most frequent day that they are seen looking out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents’ Daylight is regarded as a national holiday observed on the third Monday of February. It is a tribute to the past presidents of America. The Presidents Day holiday served as a day of honor for both Lincoln and Washington.
Despite being an official holiday of the United States but not every state observes the holiday in all states. Some states honor the birthdays of both presidents on the same day, but other states only recognize only one president. Although Presidents’ day is now standard this holiday allows us to honor all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.
There is a complicated history of Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday was the original title of the celebration. Today, Presidents’ day is the official title.
Washington’s Birthday, commonly known as Washington’s Day, is an not a holiday recognized by the government but is widely known. In the 1870s however it was declared a federally recognized holiday. In response, Congress passed Uniform Monday Holiday Law.
Meteors hurling storms
Every year, the Earth passes through its circle around the sun which causes an explosion of tiny meteors to explode into space. In the sky, they can be seen everywhere. Certain showers are more spectacular in comparison to others. It is at night that is the most ideal moment to see them.
Perseids are one of the most stunning and impressive meteor showers in the year. It is probable that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible. Although it is visible in the Northern Hemisphere because of its massive fireworks however, the Southern Hemisphere also has the highest visibility.
Each year there are four important meteor showers. The Quadrantid is number one because of its powerful but brief maximum. The Lyrid, another, is famous for its unique surges. The Geminid is also known for its approachable appearance.
Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia holiday was very loved in ancient Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar next to the Lapis Niger in the ceremony. The hearth was stuffed with blood of the animal. The grain fields were believed to benefit from its protection and fertility.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was held to honor of Ceres, the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations date back to the year 202 BC.
Neptunalia, Saturnalia, Vestalia were just a few of the most well-known Roman celebrations. These celebrations were initially held in honor of Mars the god of war.
Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two sections to every day, the morning and the afternoon. A nundin was an eight-day collection, the rest of the year being comprised of 29 days.
