The idea for this custom was born from a discovery by scientists that mice hibernate during winter. The original plan was to predict the duration of the seasons by observing how animals responded to weather.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae group of tiny hairy mammals. It hibernates throughout winter. Groundhog Day mornings are a great time to spot them peering from their burrows.
Christmas Day
On the third Monday of February President’s Daylight is declared a national holiday. It is a tribute to the presidents who have gone before us. It has been a day to pay tribute to both Lincoln and Washington.
Although it’s a federal holiday not all states observe this day. Some states honor both presidents simultaneously, whereas other states only honor one. Although Presidents’ day is now common this holiday allows us to remember the names of all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.
Presidents Day has a complicated past. Washington’s Birthday was the original title of the day’s celebration. Today, Presidents’ day is the official title.
Washington’s birthday is a well-known and not officially recognized holiday, as well as Washington’s Day. It was declared an official holiday of the United States in the late 1870s. This led to Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

The Lupercalia was an ancient Roman holiday that was loved by many. A cleansing and fertility ceremony took place during February in the middle. Priests offered sacrifices to animals at an altar near the Lapis Niger during the rite. The hearth was filled with the blood of the animal. The belief was that this would benefit grain crops by ensuring fertility and protecting them.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres (the harvest goddess). Ludi Ceriales celebrations date back to 202 BC.
Neptunalia was among the more popular Roman celebrations. These celebrations were originally planned to honor Mars and the god of war.
Roman workweeks took eight days. Each day was divided into two sections: morning and the afternoon. The nundin lasted 8 days. The remainder of the year was constituted by the remaining days.
