Groundhog Day falls on February 2. It’s also a very popular holiday in Canada However, Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated in the United States.
The celebration was born out of superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. German immigrants brought the practice of making weather predictions to the United States. Punxsutawney Phil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who makes forecasts for the rest of winter.
The tradition originated from an observation by scientists that a mouse hibernated in winter. The idea was to predict the next six weeks of the season based on observations of the way that animals reacted.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae which is a tiny family of mammals that have hair. During the winter, its main purpose is to hibernate. Groundhog Day is the most frequent day that they are in view from their burrows.
Christmas Day
On the third Monday of February, President’s Daylight is recognized as a national holiday. It is a tribute to the presidents who have gone before us. It is a holiday that is dedicated to the two presidents, Lincoln, Washington, and it has been Presidents’ Day since its inception.
While it is a federal holiday, many states do not observe it. Some states recognize the presidents of both countries, while others only recognize one. Presidents Day has become a day to honor the all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
It has had a complicated story. Washington’s Birthday was the first reason for the name for this holiday.
Washington’s birthday is an incredibly well-known and unofficial holidaythat is also known as Washington’s Day. It became a federal holiday in late 1870s. Congress passed the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteor showers
Each year, Earth rotates around its sun. Small meteors are released into the atmosphere. They can be observed all over the sky. Some showers are more impressive then others. The best time to view.
Perseids is one of most stunning and spectacular meteor showers of 2018. This is due to Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. While it will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere because of its large number of fireballs However, the Southern Hemisphere also has the most visibility.
There are four major meteor showers each year. The Quadrantid is number one because of its powerful but short maximum. The Lyrid, another, is famous for its unique surges. Additionally the Geminid is renowned for its attractive appearance.
Roman holidays that date back to antiquity
The Lupercalia is among the most celebrated holidays in the ancient city of Rome. In the middle of February the fertility and cleansing ceremony was conducted. The priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar in front of the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was stuffed with blood of the animal. It was believed to be beneficial to the fertility and protection of the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented back to 202 BC.
Vestalia, Saturnalia, and Neptunalia were three other famous Roman celebrations. These celebrations were originally held in honor of Mars, the godof war.
Roman workweeks were eight days long. There were two parts of every day: morning and afternoon. Nundin was a collection consisting of eight days. The remaining 29 days were the rest of the calendar year.
