The Lupercalia celebration was very well-known in the ancient city of Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony took place in the middle of February. During this rite, priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar next to the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was filled up with the animal’s blood. The belief was that this would benefit grain crops by ensuring fertility and protecting them.
