Groundhog Day, which is observed every February 2, is an annual celebration. Although it is a popular holiday in Canada the Thanksgiving holiday is an American holiday.
The idea for this celebration came out of a belief in superstition among Pennsylvanians speaking Dutch. However, Americans gained the custom of making predictions about weather through German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil is a Pennsylvania groundhog that makes predictions for the rest of winter.
The story began when scientists discovered mice that were hibernating throughout the winter. The goal was to forecast the weather for the remaining six weeks, by observing how animals respond to it.
Groundhogs form part of the Sciuridae tribe of small, hairy mammals. In winter, their primary goal is to hibernate. Groundhog Day is the most frequent day that they are observed looking out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
On the third Monday in February, President’s Daylight is recognized as an American holiday. It celebrates the past American presidents. It is a day to pay tribute to both Lincoln and Washington.
Although it’s an annual holiday of the United States, some states do not observe it. Certain states honor both presidents, while others only recognize one. Presidents Day has become an opportunity to remember all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
The background of Presidents’ Day is complicated. Washington’s Birthday was the name used for the day of celebration. It is now also known as Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday, also known by the name Washington’s Day was a well-known non-official holiday. It became a federal holiday in late 1870s. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress.
Meteor showers
Each year, Earth’s orbit revolves around sun. A stream of tiny meteors explodes into space. They are visible from anywhere in the sky. Certain showers are more spectacular in comparison to others. The best moment to view.
The Perseids meteor shower is one of the most stunning and biggest of meteor showers. It is because of the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. It will be visible from Northern Hemisphere. But, considering that the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most spectacular fireworks, it is only natural to be able to observe the phenomenon from that region.
There are four major meteor showers each year. One of them is Quadrantid. Its short , but strong peak is the one that is the most well-known. Another one is the Lyrid. It’s famous for the odd surges it produces. The Geminid is also known for its attractive appearance.
Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia was a popular holiday in ancient Rome. A cleansing and fertility ceremony was held in mid February. In the course of the ceremony, priests offered animal sacrifices to an altar near the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was then emptied of the blood of the animal. The protection and fertility of the blood is believed to have been beneficial to the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to 202 BC.
Vestalia, Saturnalia, and Neptunalia were three other famous Roman celebrations. These celebrations were originally held to honor Mars, a god of war.
Roman workweeks had eight days. There were two parts of each day: the morning and afternoon. The nundin was comprised of 8 days. The rest of the year was made up by the remaining 29 days.
