Calendar Page March 2023 – There are a variety of holiday celebrations which take place during February. Some of the most celebrated celebrations are Presidents’ Day. Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and meteor showers. There are also a variety of historical Roman celebrations that occur at different times of the year.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day celebrates love and love every February 14. The holiday’s beginnings can be traced back to the Middle Ages, a time when sacraments and courtly love were widespread.
It was a day to celebrate romantic love in the 14th century. On Valentine’s Day, it was customary to send flowers, cards and presents to one another.
The beginning of the nineteenth century saw the introduction commercial cards. Also, postcards that were printed in bulk gained popularity. Themed displays of these postcards were displayed in shops.
Valentine’s Day is traditionally marked by giving your loved one an item of candy or chocolate and an arrangement or card. You could also choose to present them with jewellery.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day occurs annually on February 2. While it is also a popular holiday in Canada the Thanksgiving holiday is an American holiday in the United States.
The festival was born out of superstition in the minds of Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. The custom of forecasting weather was introduced in America by German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who makes meteorological predictions throughout the winter.
Scientists discovered that a mouse was able to hibernate in winter. The idea was to forecast the next six weeks by studying the way animals react to weather conditions.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae group of small hairy mammals. It hibernates in winter. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be observed peering out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday in February) is a national holiday. The holiday honors the previous American presidents. The Presidents’ Day was traditionally a day to honor Lincoln as well as Washington.
Although it’s a federal holiday some states do not observe it. Some states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents on the same day, but others only honor only one. The Presidents Day holiday is an occasion to celebrate all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
It has a long story. Washington’s Birthday was the original title of the holiday. Today, it is Presidents’ Day.
An unofficial holiday that is well-known was the birthday of Washington, which is often called Washington’s Day. But it became a recognized federal holiday in the late 1870s. Congress passed the Uniform Monday Day Holiday Act.
Meteor showers
Each year each year, the Earth is in orbit around the sun, creating an explosion of tiny meteors to explode into space. They can be observed everywhere in the sky. Some showers are more spectacular than others. It is generally the nighttime time to watch.
Perseids is one of most stunning and spectacular meteor showers of the year 2018. This is because Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle was the cause of it. It’s only visible from the Northern Hemisphere. However, since the Southern Hemisphere has the highest fireball rates, it’s worthwhile checking out from there.
Four major meteor showers take place every year. The Quadrantid, number one, is known for its brief but powerful maximum. Another is the Lyrid. It is famous for its odd surges. The Geminid is also famous for its pleasant appearance.
Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia festival was extremely popular in ancient Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony took place during February in the middle. Priests offered animal sacrifices at an altar close to the Lapis Niger during the ritual. The hearth was filled with the animal’s blood. It was believed that the hearth would offer fertility and protection for the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as the year 202 BC.
Other famous Roman celebrations are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. The celebrations were originally intended to celebrate Mars the god of War.
Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two sections to every day, the morning part and the afternoon. A nundin was an eight-day collection, with the rest of the year comprised of 29 days.
