This celebration was born out of a belief in superstition that was prevalent among Pennsylvanians who spoke Dutch. The tradition of forecasting weather was brought to the United States by German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil, a Pennsylvania groundhog makes meteorological predictions throughout the winter.
After scientists found out that mice hibernate during winter, they established the basis for this practice. The aim was to predict the weather conditions for the six remaining weeks by observing how animals respond to it.
Groundhogs are part of Sciuridae which is a small group of mammals that have hair. During the winter, its main goal is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day mornings are a great time to spot them peering from their burrows.

Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a holiday that is celebrated across the nation. It’s an honor to all previous American presidents. The Presidents Day holiday has served as a day of celebration for both Lincoln and Washington.

The Lupercalia was a Roman festival, which was loved by many. A fertility and cleansing ceremony took place in the middle of February. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar next to the Lapis Niger during the rite. The hearth was filled up with blood of the animal. The belief was that it would be beneficial for fertility of the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor of Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as the year 202 BC.
