When scientists discovered that mice hibernate during winter, they set the foundation for this custom. The goal was to predict the following six weeks of winter by observing how animals responded to weather.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae which is a small group of mammals that have hair. They hibernate during the winter months. Groundhog Day is a common time when they can be looking out from their burrows.

Presidents Daylight, which falls on the third Monday in February, is considered to be a national holiday. It pays tribute to past American presidents. It has been a day to pay tribute to both Lincoln and Washington.
While it’s a federal holiday several states do not observe it. Certain states honor both presidents simultaneously, whereas others only recognize one. The Presidents’ Day holiday is now widely accepted as a way to recognize the achievements of all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.
There is a long and complicated story that explains Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday used to be the first name given to the holiday. Today, it’s called Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday also known as Washington’s Day was a well-known non-official holiday. It was recognized as a federal holiday by Congress in the late 1870s. Congress approved the Uniform Monday Day Holiday Act.

Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia was a well-known festival in ancient Rome. In the middle of February the fertility and cleansing ceremony was celebrated. Priests offered sacrifices to animals at an altar near the Lapis Niger during the ritual. The hearth was then emptied of the blood of the animal. It was believed that the hearth could provide fertility and security for the grain fields.

Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two parts of each day: the morning and the afternoon. A nundin was an eight-day collection, the rest of the year being made up of 29 days.
