The tradition was born when scientists found an animal that was hibernating in the winter. The goal was to predict the next six weeks of the season by watching how animals responded to the weather.

Groundhogs form part of the Sciuridae family of small hairy mammals. In winter, their main goal is to hibernate. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be looking out from their burrows.

Presidents Daylight (third Monday in February) is a federal holiday. The holiday honors the past American presidents. In the past, Presidents Day has been a day to honor both Lincoln and Washington.

Although it’s a federal holiday many states don’t observe it. Certain states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents at the same time, but some states only recognize only one. Although Presidents’ day is now standard, it allows us to remember the names of all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.

The background of Presidents’ Day is a bit tangled. Washington’s Birthday was the original name of the event. Today, it is Presidents Day.

Washington’s birthday, also known as Washington’s Day is a well-known not-official holiday. In the 1870s, however it was declared an official holiday recognized by the federal government. Congress approved the Uniform Monday Day Holiday Act.

Storms of Meteors

There are four major meteor Showers each year. One of them is Quadrantid. Its short , but strong peak is the one that is the most well-known. A different one that stands out for its distinctive surges is The Lyrid. The Geminid is known for its easygoing appearance.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity

The Lupercalia celebration was very loved in ancient Rome. A cleansing and fertility ceremony was held during February in the middle. In the course of the ceremony, priests offered animal sacrifices to an altar near the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. The grain fields were thought to be protected and fertility.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to celebrate Ceres (the goddess of the harvest). Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented from the year 202 BC.

Other well-known Roman celebrations are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These celebrations were originally planned to celebrate Mars and the god of war.

Roman workweeks had eight days. Each day had two parts: morning or the afternoon. Nundin was a collection of eight days. The remaining 29 days comprised the remainder of the calendar year.
