This custom was born from a discovery by scientists that a mouse hibernated during winter. The plan was to forecast the next six weeks of the season by studying how animals reacted to the conditions.
Groundhogs are part the Sciuridae Family of small, hairy mammals. In winter, their main objective is to hibernate. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be observed peering out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a federal holiday. It pays tribute to past American presidents. Presidents’ Day has historically been a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln.
Although it’s an official holiday, not all states observe it. While some states recognize both presidents birthdays on the same day, other states only recognize only one. The Presidents Day holiday is a day to honor all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
The origins of Presidents’ Day is a bit tangled. Washington’s Birthday used to be the original name for the celebration. Now, it is also known as Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday, also called Washington’s Day is a well-known not-official holiday. However, it was recognized as a federal holiday in the late 1870s. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was approved by Congress.
Meteor storms
Each year, the Earth is orbiting in the solar system. This results in a flood of tiny meteors which are released into space. They can be observed everywhere in the sky. Certain showers are more spectacular then others. It is usually recommended to watch the showers at night.
Perseids are among the most impressive and spectacular meteor showers in the year. It is because of the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. Every year, there are four important meteor showers. The Quadrantid is the first, and is known for its brief but potent maximum. Another is the Lyrid. It’s known for the odd surges it produces. The Geminid is renowned for its sexy appearance.
Roman holidays that date back to antiquity
The Lupercalia was a popular holiday in ancient Rome. A ritual of cleansing and fertility were held in the middle February. Priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar for the Lapis Nuiger at the time of the ceremony. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. It was believed that it would benefit grain crops by ensuring fertility and also protecting the crops from damage.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to pay tribute to Ceres (the goddess of harvest). Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented.
Other famous Roman celebrations are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. The celebrations were originally celebrated to honor Mars the god of war.
Roman workweeks were 8 days long. There were two periods to every day: the morning and the afternoon. Nundins were collections of eight days, and the other 29 days made up the remainder of the year.
