Roman holidays that date back to antiquity

The Lupercalia was a popular holiday in ancient Rome. A ritual of cleansing and fertility were held in the middle February. Priests offered animal sacrifices on the altar for the Lapis Nuiger at the time of the ceremony. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. It was believed that it would benefit grain crops by ensuring fertility and also protecting the crops from damage.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to pay tribute to Ceres (the goddess of harvest). Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented.

Other famous Roman celebrations are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. The celebrations were originally celebrated to honor Mars the god of war.

Roman workweeks were 8 days long. There were two periods to every day: the morning and the afternoon. Nundins were collections of eight days, and the other 29 days made up the remainder of the year.
