Groundhog Day, which is observed every February 2, is an annual holiday. Even though it’s a big deal in Canada the Thanksgiving holiday is an American holiday.
This celebration was born out of a belief in superstition in the minds of Pennsylvanians who spoke Dutch. The American tradition of making weather forecasts was brought to America through German immigration. Punxsutawney Phil is a groundhog native to Pennsylvania provides meteorological predictions throughout the winter.
When researchers discovered that mice hibernate in winter, they set the basis for this practice. The goal was to predict the next six weeks of winter by studying how animals responded to the weather.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae group of small hairy mammals. It hibernates in winter. The morning of Groundhog Day, they are often observed peeking out of burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight, which falls on the third Monday in February, is considered to be an official holiday of the United States. It pays tribute to past American presidents. It has been a day to honor both Lincoln and Washington.
While it’s an official holiday of the United States however, not all states observe it. Although some states honor both the presidents birthdays on the exact same day while other states only honor one. But, Presidents’ Day is now widely recognized as a day to honor all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.
There’s a rich history that explains Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday was the first reason for the title of the celebration.
Washington’s birthday, often referred to by the name Washington’s Day was a well-known non-official holiday. It was recognized as a national holiday by Congress in the latter 1870s. In response, Congress passed Uniform Monday Holiday Law.
Storms of meteors
Each year each year, the Earth orbits in the solar system. This causes a flood of small meteors that are released into space. They are visible all over the sky. Some showers appear more impressive than other. The best time to watch.
The Perseids meteor shower is among the most impressive and biggest of meteor showers. It is possible that the Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible. While it’s visible in the Northern Hemisphere because of its high rate of fireworks however, the Southern Hemisphere also has the highest visibility.
There are four major meteor showers each year. Number one is the Quadrantid. Its brief but strong peak is the one that is most famous. The other is the Lyrid which is famous for its unique surges. The Geminid is also famous for its warm appearance.
Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia was one of the most well-liked holidays in ancient Rome. The month of February was when a fertility-cleansing ceremony was conducted. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar close to the Lapis Niger during the rite. The hearth was filled with blood of the animal. The fertility and protection of the blood is believed to be beneficial to the grain field.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was held to honor of Ceres, the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations date back to 202 BC.
Neptunalia and Saturnalia were some other well-known Roman celebrations. They were celebrated originally in honor of Mars who was the god of war.
Roman working weeks lasted for eight days. There were two phases to every day: morning and afternoon. The nundin was eight days long, and the 29 days remaining were the remainder.
