This celebration was born from a belief system that was popular among Pennsylvanians who spoke Dutch. But Americans inherited the tradition of making predictions about weather through German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog from Pennsylvania, makes meteorological predictions for the remainder of winter.
It all started when scientists found an animal that was hibernating during the winter. The idea was to forecast the weather for the remaining six weeks, by observing how animals respond to it.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae, a small family of hairy mammals. In winter, their primary function is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day mornings are a perfect time to see them peering from their burrows.

On the third Monday of February the President’s Daylight is declared an American holiday. It is a way to honor the past presidents of America. Presidents’ Day has historically served as a day to pay tribute to both Washington and Lincoln.
While it is a federal holiday however, many states do not observe it. Some states celebrate both presidents at the same time, while other states only honor one. The Presidents’ Day holiday is widely recognized as a day to honor all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.
Presidents Day has had a tangled history. Washington’s Birthday was the first name of this celebration.
Washington’s Birthday, commonly known as Washington’s Day, is an non-official holiday, but it is well-known. In the latter half of 1870s it became a national holiday. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was enacted by Congress.
Meteors and storms
Each year each year, the Earth is in circle around the sun creating tiny meteors to be released into space. They appear virtually everywhere in the sky. Certain showers are more spectacular than others. Nighttime is the best time to watch.

Each year there are four important meteor showers. One of the most well-known meteor showers is the Quadrantid. It is famous for its small but extremely strong peak. The Lyrid also is renowned for its peculiar surges. The Geminid is also well-known for its friendly appearance.
Roman holidays from antiquity
The Lupercalia festival was extremely well-known in the ancient city of Rome. A cleansing and fertility ceremony were held in the middle February. At this time the priests offered sacrifices of animals on the altar next to the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was emptied of blood from the animal. It was believed that it would benefit grains by ensuring their fertility and protecting the plants from harm.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Ludi Ceriales celebrations date back to the year 202 BC.
Neptunalia was among the most popular Roman celebrations. They were celebrated originally to honor Mars, a god of war.
