This celebration was born from a belief system that was popular in the minds of Pennsylvanians who spoke Dutch. German immigrants brought the practice of forecasting weather into the United States. Punxsutawney Phil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who makes forecasts for the rest of winter.

The tradition was born after scientists discovered a mouse that hibernated in the winter. The plan was to forecast the coming six weeks of the season using observations about the way that animals reacted.

The Sciuridae family of small hairy mammals also includes groundhogs. It hibernates throughout the winter months. On the morning of Groundhog Day, they are frequently spotted peering out from their burrows.

Christmas Day

The third Monday of February, President’s Daylight is declared a national holiday. It celebrates the former American presidents. It has been a day to pay tribute to both Lincoln and Washington.

Meteor storms

Each year, the Earth’s orbit rotates around the sun. A torrent of small meteors explodes into space. They appear in any part of the sky. Some showers are more spectacular than others. It is generally the nighttime moment to observe.

One of the largest and most stunning meteor showers of the year is the Perseids. This is due to the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. Although it is visible in the Northern Hemisphere because of its high rate of fireballs, the Southern Hemisphere also has the highest visibility.

Every year, there are four important meteor showers. The Quadrantid, number one, is renowned for its brief but potent maximum. Another well-known for its odd surges is the Lyrid. The Geminid is also known for its attractive appearance.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity

The Lupercalia was a major celebration in the ancient city of Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was held. Priests offered sacrifices to animals at an altar close to the Lapis Niger during the rite. The hearth was cleaned of the blood of the animal. It was believed that the hearth would offer fertility and protection for the grain fields.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented from 202 BC.

Neptunalia was one of the other popular Roman celebrations. These celebrations were initially held to honor Mars, the godof war.

Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two periods to every day: the morning and the afternoon. A nundin was a collection that comprised of 8 days. The remaining 29 days made up the remainder of the calendar year.
