Calendar Events March 2023 – There are numerous wonderful holidays that are scheduled for February , and they are all observed throughout the month. Some examples of these holidays include Valentine’s Day or Groundhog Day Presidents’ Day, Groundhog Day or meteor showers. There are also many ancient Roman celebrations which take place on different dates.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day is an annual celebration of love and passion and is observed on February 14. The origins of the holiday can be traced to the Middle Ages, a time where courtly love and sacraments were all the rage.
It was a celebration of love between romantic friends and lovers in the fourteenth century. Valentine’s Day was a day when it was customary for friends and lovers to exchange gifts, flowers, or cards.
The early nineteenth century saw the advent of commercial cards. The demand for postcards printed in bulk was also increasing. They were put up in shops as displays with themes.
Valentine’s Day traditions include buying your beloved a chocolate or chocolate present along with a bouquet of flowers or a card. You may also choose to give them jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day occurs annually on February 2. Groundhog Day is celebrated each year in Canada on February 2.
This celebration was born from a belief system that was popular in the minds of Pennsylvanians speaking Dutch. However, Americans gained the custom of making predictions about weather through German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil is a Pennsylvania groundhog makes forecasts for meteorological conditions throughout the winter.
The tradition originated from the discovery of scientists by discovering that mouse hibernates during winter. The idea was to forecast the weather conditions for the remaining six weeks by studying how animals react to it.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae tribe of small hairy mammals. They hibernate throughout the winter months. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be looking out from their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight, which falls on the third Monday of February, is regarded as to be a national holiday. It honors previous American presidents. It is a day to honour both Lincoln and Washington.
It’s a national holiday that not all states observe despite being one. Some states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents on the same day, but other states only recognize one. However, Presidents’ Day is widely regarded as a day to honor all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.
There is a long and complicated story behind Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday was the first reason for the name of this celebration.
Washington’s birthday, more commonly called Washington’s Day is a well-known unofficial holiday. It was declared a federal holiday in late 1870s. This led to Congress approved the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
Meteors and storms
Every year, Earth rotates around its sun. Small meteors are released into the atmosphere. They can appear everywhere. Some showers are more stunning then others. It is usually best to view the showers at night.
Perseids is among the most stunning and spectacular meteor showers of the year 2018. This is due to the fact that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible for. Although it will be visible from the Northern Hemisphere due to the large number of fireballs that occur within the Southern Hemisphere, it is worthwhile to observe from that area.
There are four major meteor showers every year. One of the most famous meteor showers is the Quadrantid. It is famous for its small but very powerful peak. Another is the Lyrid which is famous for its unique surges. The Geminid is famous for its easygoing appearance.
Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia celebration was very well-known in the ancient city of Rome. In February, in the middle there was a cleansing and fertility ceremony was celebrated. Priests offered sacrifices to animals at an altar next to the Lapis Niger during the ritual. The hearth was filled up with the blood of the animal. It was believed that it would benefit the grains by ensuring their fertility and securing the plants from harm.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to pay tribute to Ceres (the harvest goddess). Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to the year 202 BC.
Other well-known Roman festivities are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These were originally celebrated in honor of Mars the god of war.
Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two phases of each day: morning and afternoon. Nundins were collections of eight days. the other 29 days comprised the rest of the year.
