February 14th
Valentine’s Day is a day dedicated to love and passion which is celebrated every year on February 14. The origins of the holiday can be traced back to the Middle Ages, a time where sacraments and courtly love were widespread.
It was considered to be an occasion to celebrate romance between romantic partners and friends in the fourteenth century. Valentine’s Day was a day when it was customary for friends and lovers to give gifts, flowers and cards.
In the early 19th century commercial cards became easily available. The popularity of postcards printed in bulk also grew. These postcards were also sought-after in shops because they could be displayed in themed designs.
Valentine’s Day traditions include buying your loved one a sweet or chocolate present , along with a bouquet of flowers or a card. It is possible to also present jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day is observed annually on February 2. Even though it’s a big deal in Canada the Thanksgiving holiday is an American holiday.
The belief in the superstition of Pennsylvanians Dutch people contributed to the festival. However, the custom of making weather predictions came to the United States with German immigration. PunxsutawneyPhil, a Pennsylvania groundhog makes meteorological predictions for all of the winter.
Researchers discovered that mice hibernated in winter. The goal was to predict the coming six weeks of the season based on observations of how the animals responded.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae which is a small group of mammals that have hair. It hibernates in winter. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be seen peering out from their burrows.
Christmas Day
The third Monday of February is known as Presidents’ Daylight. It is recognized as a national holiday. It’s a tribute to all past American presidents. Presidents’ Day has traditionally been a day to celebrate both Washington and Lincoln.
It’s a national holiday that not all states observe even though it is one. Certain states honor both presidents, while other states are limited to only one. Presidents Day is now widely celebrated as a time to celebrate all U.S. presidents, especially Lincoln.
The history of Presidents’ Day is complicated. Washington’s Birthday was the original title of the holiday and is now known as Presidents’ Day.
Washington’s birthday, often referred to as Washington’s Day was a well-known non-official holiday. In the 1870s however it was declared a federally recognized holiday. Congress passed the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteors hurling storms
Each year, the Earth’s orbit revolves around the sun. A torrent of small meteors is released into space. They appear virtually everywhere in the sky. Certain showers are more stunning than others. Nighttime is typically the best time to watch.
Perseids is one of most beautiful and impressive meteor showers in 2018. This is due to the fact that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle created it. While it is not seen from the Northern Hemisphere due to the high rates of fireballs in the Southern Hemisphere, it is worthwhile to observe from that area.
Every year there are four important meteor showers. One of them is Quadrantid. Its brief but strong peak is the one that is most famous. A different one that stands out for its distinctive surges is The Lyrid. Furthermore the Geminid is known for its sexy appearance.
Roman holidays from antiquity
The Lupercalia is one of the most well-known holidays of ancient Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. Priests offered animal sacrifices close to the altar of Lapis Negiger during the ceremony. The hearth was cleaned of blood from the animal. It was believed to be beneficial for the fertility of the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was held to honor of Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to 202 BC.
Other famous Roman festivities include Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. The celebrations were initially planned to celebrate Mars as the god of war.
Roman working weeks lasted for eight days. There were two parts of each day: the morning and afternoon. Nundin was an 8-day collection, with the remainder of the year made up of 29 days.
