The celebration was conceived of as a superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. The American tradition of making forecasts for weather was introduced to America by German immigration. Punxsutawney Phil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who gives forecasts for the remainder of winter.
The practice was first introduced after scientists discovered an animal that was hibernating during winter. The initial plan was to predict six weeks of the seasons by watching how animals responded to climate.
Groundhogs are part of Sciuridae which is a small group of hairy mammals. It hibernates throughout winter. Groundhog Day is the most frequent day that they are in view from their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a federal holiday. It celebrates the former American presidents. Presidents’ Day has historically been a time to honor both Washington and Lincoln.
Despite being an official holiday of the United States but not every state observes the holiday in all states. Some states celebrate both presidents simultaneously, while other states only honor one. The Presidents Day is now a day to honor the all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
Presidents Day has a complicated past. Washington’s Birthday was originally the name of the event. It is now Presidents’ Day.
An unofficial holiday that is well-known was the birthday of Washington, which is often called Washington’s Day. It was recognized as an official holiday of the United States Congress in the late 1870s. Congress approved the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteors and storms
Each year, Earth’s orbit rotates around sun. A torrent of small meteors is released into space. In the sky, they can be seen everywhere. Some showers are more stunning then others. The best time for watching.
Perseids is one of most spectacular and stunning meteor showers of the year 2018. This is due to the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. It will be visible from Northern Hemisphere. But, because the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most stunning fireballs, it makes sense to also observe the phenomenon from there.
There are four major meteor showers every year. The Quadrantid 1 is well-known for its explosive but short peak. One of the most notable for its distinctive surges is the Lyrid. Furthermore the Geminid is famous for its attractive appearance.
Roman holidays from antiquity
The Lupercalia was a well-known festival in ancient Rome. The month of February was when a fertility-cleansing ceremony was performed. During the ceremony, priests offered sacrifices of animals to an altar close to the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. The grain fields were thought to be protected and fertility.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Since the year 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations were recorded.
Neptunalia and Saturnalia were some other well-known Roman festivals. These celebrations were originally planned to honor Mars and the god of war.
Roman workweeks ran for eight days. There were two parts of each day, the morning as well as the evening. A nundin was eight days long, while the 29 remaining days were the remainder.
