The idea for this celebration came from superstition in the minds of Pennsylvanians speaking Dutch. The practice of forecasting the weather was brought in America by German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil, a Pennsylvania groundhog that provides forecasts for winter weather throughout the year.

After scientists found out that mice hibernate during winter, they established the foundation for this custom. The idea was to forecast the weather conditions for the remaining six weeks, by observing how animals respond to it.

Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae group of tiny hairy mammals. They hibernate throughout the winter months. Groundhog Day is the most common day they can be seen looking out of their burrows.

Presidents Daylight (third Monday in February) is a national holiday. It pays tribute the past American presidents. It was a time to honor both Lincoln and Washington.

Although it’s a federal holiday, many states do not observe it. Certain states observe both birthdays of the presidents on the same day while other states may only recognize only one. While Presidents’ Day is now a common thing however, it is a good opportunity to remember the names of all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.

Presidents’ Day has a convoluted history. Washington’s Birthday is the original name for this holiday.

Washington’s birthday, more commonly known as Washington’s Day is a well-known not-official holiday. In the late 1870s, it was made a federal holiday. In the end, Congress approved the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

Meteors and storms

Each year, Earth moves around the sun. Every year, small meteors are released into space. They may appear from all directions. Some showers are more impressive than others. The best time for viewing them is at night.

Perseids are among the most powerful and beautiful meteor showers of the year. This is due to the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. It’s visible only in the Northern Hemisphere. However, due to the fact that the Southern Hemisphere has the highest fireball rates, it’s worth checking out from there.

Each year there are four major meteor showers. Number one is the Quadrantid. Its short but strong peak is the one that is the most well-known. Another is the Lyrid. It is famous for its odd surges. The Geminid is also famous for its approachable appearance.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity

The Lupercalia was one of the most popular holidays of the past of Rome. In February, a fertility-cleansing ceremony was held. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar near the Lapis Niger during the rite. The hearth was then emptied of the blood of the animal. The belief was that this would benefit the grains by ensuring their fertility and also protecting the plants from harm.

Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Ludi Ceriales celebrations were first recorded in 202 BC.

Neptunalia and Saturnalia were two other well-known Roman festivals. These celebrations were originally meant to celebrate Mars the god of War.

Roman workweeks were eight days long. Every day consisted of two parts: the morning and the afternoon. A nundin consisted of 8 days. The rest of the year was made up by the remaining 29 days.
